Two Sisters Explore Sisters Garden – Johnson County, Iowa

July 12, 2018 by Meemaw 4 Comments

Sometimes those Indy sisters can’t agree on an activity. And in this case Big Sis decided to stay in the car and peruse her smartphone while her younger sisters did a little more exploring with me. And that adventure took place only a few miles from the farm where I grew up.

We made a quick stop at Sisters Garden Gift Shop. It’s an old farmhouse and outbuildings that are filled to overflowing with an eclectic mix of architectural finds.  My dad used to say “Everything from Soup to Nuts!”

When I say overflowing…I mean it! The entire property is filled with rustic yard art. I could spend hours at the place. And because many items are one of a kind it pays to stop by often to see what “treasures” have recently been scouted out by the owners.

I was immediately drawn to a newly constructed “She Shed” made of all types of reclaimed old windows.

I absolutely fell in love with it! I could picture that building as a wine bar or a comfortable reading nook.

And those sisters were drawn to the eclectic mixture of items outside the farmhouse. Including this one.

Once we made our way inside the main farmhouse we were drawn to the smell of the wonderful array of handmade soaps.

Each of the girls picked out their favorite one and they decided on the perfect one to give their sister too. (I love that “kindness streak” they share.)

The design elements and items for sale in that store range from rusty old garden tools to postcards and beautiful items like this light fixture.

And speaking of beautiful…check out this view from the rustic back porch. It’s a Grant Wood scene for sure.

There is even a TOYS section at Sisters Garden. And those girls found one or two new “friends” who each got a hug before we left.

Yes, it’s a must-see if you find yourself on Highway One between Iowa City and Kalona, Iowa. And the views are worth a million bucks.

But they’re actually free.

Love that window she shed! I want to go there with you the next time I’m in Iowa, probably not until Sept.

Thanks Patricia. We’ll have to allow LOTS of time at Sisters Garden! It’s a beautiful spot in the Heartland.
