Ole’s Big Game Steakhouse – Paxton, Nebraska

August 13, 2014 by Meemaw Leave a Comment

Nebraska has some wide open spaces.  Really wide open.  And if you get hungry, you might have to put your growling stomach on hold while you search for a place to eat.  Any place.  And I mean ANY place.

We were beginning to think breakfast might become lunch if we didn’t find a place soon.  And then we found Paxton.

Paxton is a little town.  600 residents.  And driving down Main Street (heck..it’s the ONLY street) we saw nothing promising.  So we pulled into the gas station and asked a “local” if there was ANY place to eat…and he pointed across the street to Ole’s Big Game Steak House.  Yup…a steak house for breakfast.  Only in Nebraska.

Our friendly waitress, Laura, kept our coffee cups brimming, and she shared many tidbits about the area while our breakfasts were being prepared.  And what do you get for breakfast in a BIG GAME Steakhouse??

No matter WHAT you order…It will be BIG.  REALLY BIG.  (In fact, I’m writing this blog post about eight hours after breakfast…and I haven’t eaten a bite since then.)

After breakfast, as we were preparing to leave, Laura told us to be sure and go through the door from the cafe into the adjacent bar area to check it out.  And it was certainly something to see. Really.

Apparently the restaurant owner, Ole, was a hunter…of anything that moved.  (Humans excluded, I hope.) Let me just say I don’t understand the reason why anyone would want to shoot a giraffe just to put it’s head (and neck) on a wall.  Or why anyone would shoot any of the HUNDREDS of “trophies” to be found in that room.  I certainly don’t condone or approve of it.  But it really WAS something to see.  And we’re all about adventures on our road trips across America.

Only in Paxton…I hope.

And my message for any animals reading this??

RUN, you animals…RUN LIKE THE WIND! And DON’T head toward Paxton!
