Grilled Gruyere and Ham Panini

September 10, 2015 by Meemaw Leave a Comment

I’ve said it before…I LOVE The Outlet…Restaurant Quality Foods.
It’s located between Coralville and Tiffin…a short drive from our home in Iowa City.

And I never know what I’ll find when I go there.  But THIS find was a REAL treasure!

A SIX POUND BLOCK of mild Gruyere cheese…for $9.99!!!

This cheese is DELICIOUS.  In fact, our extended family made quite a dent in that six pounds of YUM over the weekend, but I still have plenty left to make some awesome lunches for Hubby and me.

So recently I pulled out two huge slices of this delicious bread from Aldi…
(This bread makes AWESOME grilled sandwiches, and it can hold up to just about any spreads or fillings.)

I spread the outer sides of the slices with some of this amazing butter…
(Be sure to use softened butter so you can spread it easily)

Then I piled on slices of the cheese and some thinly sliced deli ham on the unbuttered side of the bread.  And I added a layer of baby kale…just for added interest.

Then I slapped on the top slice with the buttered side up…and I slid the whole sandwich into my panini press.  If you don’t have one of those, just place the sandwich in a skillet, buttered side out. And to press it down you can wrap a brick in tin foil and set it on top of the sandwich.  Or, if you are short on spare bricks, simply set another skillet on top and set a heavy can of something heavy in that skillet to apply pressure.

And the finished product…

Hot off the press!

Hmmm…I wonder what treasure I’ll find on my next trip to The Outlet?
Stay tuned.  I’m sure I’ll be inventing some recipe to use it up!!
