A Free Bouquet – An Unexpected Treasure

August 1, 2023 by Meemaw 12 Comments

Treasure comes in many forms, and one Saturday morning I hit the motherlode! Let me set the stage.

Searching For Treasure

When we’re back in the Heartland, I often pour myself a “to-go” cup of coffee. Then I head out on Saturday mornings for a short drive. It’s the perfect time to check for nearby garage sales. I always turn on our awesome Iowa Public Radio Classical radio station and crank up the volume too. And I cruise up and down the streets in Iowa City…searching for some elusive garage sale treasure. It’s the perfect Saturday morning for me. It’s a pleasant drive with no destination in mind.

I was cruising down a street in a nearby neighborhood. A neighborhood that’s populated with university professors and garden enthusiasts. And that’s when I saw this table sitting near the curb.

Treasure indeed!

I love flowers. I even bake with some kinds! (Check out one of my favorite recipes HERE.)

So Many Choices

These beautiful tiny bouquets sitting by the curb were carefully arranged in glass jars and vases…just waiting for someone like me to claim one of them! It didn’t take me long to select my favorite bouquet.

I looked toward the welcoming front porch of the house, hoping to see someone I could thank personally for such an unexpected gift on my Saturday morning drive. But unfortunately, there was nobody in sight. (I do hope that person was peeking out of the window. And I hope they could tell by the huge smile on my face how much this unexpected gift meant to me.)

So, as I drove away, I tried to imagine the kind and generous gardener who had gotten up early on that Saturday morning. The person who picked the gorgeous flowers that would brighten the homes of folks they didn’t even know!

Treasure Indeed…

I soon headed home that morning with an empty trunk from my garage sale quest, but my heart was full of joy as I placed my real treasure on the table.

There are still good people in this mixed-up world of ours. And I think of it every time I look at this unexpected treasure.

Thank you for the reminder that there are still good people in this world. We can be so over come with all of the hate and nastiness, that the good seems elusive. The flowers are beautiful and what a wonderful thing to find on your Saturday jaunt!
