Geyer’s Oven Bread and Pizza – Oxford, Iowa

September 12, 2015 by Meemaw 4 Comments

I’m always on the lookout for new and tasty ways to explore the world we live in…and that includes hidden gems that are close to home.

So last night hubby and I asked some long-time friends to join us as we headed to a place I had only read about…Geyer’s Oven Bread & Pizza.

Check this out…

http://www.geyersovenbreadandpizza.com

In the middle of what could be a Grant Wood painting…amid rolling hills…on a farm…in the heart of the beautiful Iowa countryside…

Wood fire. Brick Oven. PIZZA!

As soon as we got out of the car near Oxford, Iowa we could smell the wood fire smoke on this beautiful early Autumn evening…and this farm field was eventually FILLED with cars…

We grabbed our picnic baskets, coolers, bottles of wine and our folding chairs, and we followed our noses toward our final destination.

And we were definitely NOT alone!

As we walked through the yard and around the big white farmhouse we saw THREE wood-fired pizza ovens churning out pizzas as fast as they could…

Amazing Pizzas…With unique topping combinations that tickled our taste buds all evening during this “All The Pizza You Care To Eat” event…

Toppings like Kale and Pear, Lasagna, Veggie, Hawaiian, Iowa Beef, Sausage, and even a delicious one called Apple Crumble!  And many of the ingredients used on the pizzas came directly from the farm’s large garden.

This meal gave new meaning to the term “Farm To Table”…
There was NO middle man here.

It truly was “Iowa On A Plate”.

People were free to walk through the flower gardens, and the pathways led to various beds of blooms that were begging to be seen and touched and sniffed…

I’m guessing some of the fruit used on the pizzas (like these peaches) came from these trees scattered through the farm yard…

And this small apple tree was so loaded with fruit the tiny limbs were sagging from the weight…

The huge flower garden was a delight…

And many children spent most of the evening playing hide & seek along the garden paths…

The idyllic setting was a perfect backdrop for a relaxing evening spent with our friends…

The cost for the pizza was $10 per adult, and families were asked to “pay what they thought was fair” for children.  And NOBODY collected the money!  It was all done on the honor system!  A box was located on a table, and diners simply slipped their money into the slot sometime during the evening.  (It’s a Iowa “trust” thing, I guess.)  Amazing…and Peaceful…And BEAUTIFUL.

The owners of the farm (and our chefs for the evening) made us ALL feel welcome…

Their prep kitchen was located inside a walkout basement room…and many people were helping to keep these pizzas flying out to the wood fired ovens…

The views surrounding the farm were simply breathtaking…and our friend Jerry told me this golden field across the road is actually the dying leaves on ripening soybean plants.

(Yes…I grew up in Iowa.  And No…I don’t know much about farming!)

What a BEAUTIFUL place to reconnect with our friends Debbie and Jerry…

A herd of cattle spent much of the evening in this field…watching US!

And our farm family hosts thought of every way they could make our stay enjoyable.  They even provided a fully functioning bathroom in a small building in their yard…Complete with running water for hand washing!

As the evening wound down, it was time to pack up our chairs and baskets and head back to the city. And this gorgeous sunset was the icing on the cake (or the topping on the pizza, in this case)…

Even this little farm cat seemed to know we had all enjoyed a taste of Iowa…in more ways than I ever imagined we could.

All evening a line from my favorite movie (Field Of Dreams) kept running through my head…

Is this Heaven?

No…IT’S IOWA.
