Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers – Cedar Rapids, Iowa

November 17, 2015 by Meemaw Leave a Comment

Today we found ourselves in Cedar Rapids at lunchtime, and since we were in a bit of a rush, we decided to stop into a place we’ve never been before.

Freddy’s has a different vibe.  It’s more of a hometown diner type place.  They even have old photos of the Real Freddy adorning all the walls…
Baby Freddy…

And College Freddy…

And All Grown Up Business Man Freddy…

The place has the feel of a malt shop from the 50’s.
And since I hadn’t tasted a chocolate malt for probably 25 years, I decided to end that drought…and BOY WAS IT YUMMY!  It was served with a straw about 1/2 inch in diameter since the malt was SO thick!  I could have really used a spoon.  Delicious!

The single patty burger was PLENTY!  And the order of fries were enough to serve three people!  (I left half of them behind.) They were delicious.  Not greasy at all.  Hot and just the right amount of salt.  And speaking of salt…

Freddy’s even sells their own brand of seasoned salt to take home with you.

Just check out this awesome, homemade burger!

And they also offer their own concoction of Fry Sauce for dipping.  It reminded me of the sauce served at The Arctic Circle, a little drive-in joint in McMinnville, Oregon way back in the 1970’s. Really good stuff.

So I guess this goes to prove not all franchise restaurants are created equal.

Some, like Freddy’s, are a cut above the rest.
